An April 2023 state-by-state analysis of flood risk found that West Virginia has the highest percentage of roads, commercial properties, and infrastructure in danger of being flooded, greater even than Florida or Louisiana. An EPA analysis of climate-related health risks for West Virginians finds that floods will increasingly overwhelm sewer systems and lead to contamination of drinking water. Other risks include higher temperatures and higher concentrations of ground-level ozone that will increase instances of asthma and other respiratory ailments.
