South Dakota

Several cities in eastern South Dakota experienced their worst-ever air quality days between 2018-2022 as a result of smoke from western wildfires. The climate crisis is also projected to increase the number of extreme heat days in South Dakota, which in turn will increase concentrations of ground-level ozone. Both of these climate-related dangers will increase instances of asthma and other respiratory problems for South Dakotans.

In 2022, fossil fuel lobbyists in South Dakota also lobbied on behalf of six health care interests in the state, many of whose customers and patients will be hit with higher climate-related health care costs.
