South Carolina

Like many coastal states, South Carolina is being hit with soaring home insurance costs, driven in part by the greater frequency and severity of hurricanes and tropical storms. From 2021-22, home insurance rates rose by 22%, the second-high increase of any state.

Many of the insurers lobbying Congress and state legislatures for help in covering climate-related insurance claims are, at the same time, lobbying against state legislation that would require insurers to disclosure the extent of their holdings in fossil fuel companies. Leading this anti-disclosure push is the American Property Casualty Insurance Association (APCIA). In South Carolina, APCIA shared lobbyists with Duke Energy in 2022, while the SC Property & Casualty Insurance Guaranty Association shared lobbyists with the Williams Companies, builder and operator of gas pipelines.
