Banks are facing increasing pressure from environmentalists to disassociate themselves from the fossil fuel industry. In March 2023, protestors in Charlotte called on Bank of America (BOA) to stop financing fossil fuel projects, part of an 80–city demonstration organized by the environmental group Third Act.

In 2022, Bank of America (BOA) employed lobbyists who also worked for the fossil fuel industry in ten states, the most among the top five U.S. banks. In North Carolina, BOA shared lobbyists with the Colonial Pipeline Company, coal- and gas-plant operator Alcoa, and coal ash company Charah Solutions.
