Increased rainfall and record-high water levels for Lake Michigan and Lake Superior have damaged the state’s coastal resources and its aging infrastructure, according to the Michigan Historic Preservation Office. In 2021, climate-related damage to the highway that encircles Mackinac Island cost $6 million to repair.

In 2022, the Michigan Historical Preservation Network and the Mackinac Island Visitors and Convention Bureau both employed Natasha Oxender Kimmerly, who also lobbied on behalf of coal- and gas-plant operator NRG Energy.
