Field Organizer – New York State

Date Posted: January 4, 2024

Temporary, full-time, six-month position with possible transition to permanent employment
Salary: $8,500/month

F Minus seeks a Field Organizer to lead our work in New York State to pressure universities, cultural institutions, businesses, and other victims of the climate crisis to cut ties with lobbyists who work for the fossil fuel industry. Despite the crisis, fossil fuel lobbyists continue to enjoy a positive or merely neutral image in many state capitols because many of them also represent mainstream businesses or organizations whose activities are perceived as beneficial. The Field Organizer will help F Minus disrupt this dynamic and embolden these local governments, schools, and other entities to fire these lobbyists. This job involves holding not just fossil fuel interests accountable, but also progressive, ostensibly climate-conscious entities whose own lobbyists are contributing to the climate crisis.

  • With the Executive Director, develop a strategic plan for New York State that identifies key sectors and actors we’ll pressure to divest from fossil fuel lobbyists, with a focus on universities, arts and cultural institutions, nonprofit organizations, and climate-conscious businesses.
  • Recruit environmental and other nonprofit organizations, businesses, schools, and local governments to support divestment from fossil fuel lobbyists; create and lead a statewide coalition that will amplify and act on our call for divestment.
  • Organize events, rallies, and protests calling out fossil fuel lobbyists and entities legitimizing the fossil fuel industry by employing these lobbyists; work with student groups to promote climate strikes and student actions focused on schools and universities.
  • Through social media and traditional media, call out lobbyists playing both sides of the climate crisis and pressure their non-fossil-fuel clients to cut ties with them.
  • Engage and mobilize trustees, board members, and donors to institutions who employ fossil fuel lobbyists, and enlist them as pro-divestment spokespeople.

  • Organizing: demonstrated success as a field organizer and/or community organizer, preferably in New York State, and demonstrated ability in onboarding, training, and supporting volunteers. Experience designing and implementing tactics as part of a larger campaign strategy.
  • Social media proficiency, with a demonstrated ability to engage and mobilize communities around environmental issues.
  • Team Building: Demonstrated leadership experience working within a team structure; ability to build vision, trust, and mutual accountability with team members; experience working closely with volunteers.

  • Experience with climate divestment campaigns.
  • Experience as an organizer or activist for good government campaigns such as campaign finance reform, lobbying reform, and the intersection between racial and social justice issues and money in politics.
  • Experience as a paid or volunteer lobbyist, and/or experience in working on campaigns with a lobbying component; or experience in government that involved being lobbied.

  • Bachelor’s degree—or equivalent experience.
  • At least five years experience working as a Field Organizer at an advocacy organization, preferably on environmental or government accountability issues.
